DETXOFICATION:  Detoxification diets and purification programs

By Dr. Keith Lewis

There are many detoxification diets and programs available today. You see them on TV, you see them on all forms of media, and you may even have heard about them in your doctor's office.

The program that we recommend is a multiple phase process of detoxification that takes place over a period of 3 weeks. The initial process involves detoxification primarily focused on the liver and secondarily focusing on colon, kidney, skin, blood, and lungs.

The initial cleansing phase of detoxification enlists the detoxifying properties of 20 different whole foods and botanicals in a vegetarian nutritional supplement. The phytonutrients from these multiple ingredients help the body eliminate toxins that originate in the environment as well as metabolic toxins that are given off internally. The vitamin complexes, minerals, and phytonutrients used in our cleanse program support the body's internal waste removal systems by maintaining healthy liver detoxification function, encouraging healthy kidney function, promoting efficient gastrointestinal elimination, supporting lymphatic system function, and helping maintain healthy blood.

As an additional nutritive support, we also use a complete protein shake which one can mix with water, fruit, or vegetables to make a very delicious shake. It offers a balance of essential macro and micronutrients from plant sources in high bioavailable form.

The natural whole food ingredients in the complete system deliver powerful antioxidant protection to promote cellular health and support healthy cardiovascular, digestive, and nervous system function. Whether taken alone, before meals, or as a supplement shake, our complete provides the essential vitamins and minerals to the body during purification. In addition, the complete formula can be used outside the purification program to replace vital nutrients that are lost during refining process of many foods we buy.

Our dietary supplement comes from the cellular walls of plants that has specific effects on the different areas of gastrointestinal function. Our fiber supplement contains phytonutrients from psyllium, collinsonia root, apple pectin, fennel seed, and fenugreek seed. These whole food sources function synergistically to help cleanse and lubricate the intestines, encourage regular elimination, promote pH balance throughout the gastrointestinal track, and provide an optimal environment for the natural growth of friendly intestinal bacteria.

The next supplement we use is a green food. Our green food is made up of five organically grown whole food concentrates: Brussels sprouts, kale, alfalfa, buckwheat, and barley grass. These supplements actually help rebuild, help nourish, and give our liver the nutrients that are necessary for it to function at its potential. In addition to the natural bioavailability, these foods contain vitamins, minerals, and other unknown synergistic cofactors. Brussel sprouts and kale help maintain cellular health by supplying nutrients that work to detoxify the liver.

The phytonutrients these two green vegetables protect many of our major organs. Nutrients found in Brussel sprouts and kale promote enzymatic activity required to help detoxify the liver. They also stimulate natural process's designed to clear damaged cells from the body. Our program is ideally suited for vegetarians as well as nonvegetarians and depending upon what are your preferences, this dictates what foods will be included in your diet.

Examples of some of the foods that are permitted with this detoxification program would include 3 to 4 ounces of unseasoned lean meat, fish or poultry twice a day, 1 to 2 eggs per day, unlimited fresh vegetables which would include colored greens, dandelion, mustard mixed greens, red, yellow, and green peppers, onions, mushrooms, spinach, carrots, cucumber, celery, radishes, kale, broccoli, chard, Brussel sprouts, asparagus, cabbage, artichokes, and red beets.  We also offer salads with unlimited fresh vegetables and fruit every day.  We do, however, recommend that you eat twice as many vegetables as fruit. Examples of some of the fruits that are permitted include but not limited to apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, berries, melons, and tomatoes. Two servings of brown or wild rice per day is also permitted and drinking spring water at least 8 glasses per day is also recommended. In addition, we do recommend daily exercise. We are recommending walking 30 to 45 minutes per day and if it cannot be daily, at least 4 times per week. This is important in improving lymphatic function. We also do not recommend strenuous exercise during the 3-week period.

In summary, our program specifically is a 3-week program. We do recommend particular supplements -- vitamin, mineral, and whole food supplements as a part of the detoxification process.  We have found our patients have had a great deal of relief and benefit from these programs and as a side benefit that a lot many of our patients who are overweight have actually lost anywhere from 11 to 20 pounds over a 3-week period of time. Complete directions, program guide, and journal are included in the program.

If you have questions concerning detoxification diets or programs, I would recommend you contact your healthcare provider.
