DETOXIFICATION: Cleansing your body from the inside out.

By Dr. Keith E. Lewis
June 19, 2008

Detoxification, or as we like to reference it in our clinical practice, purification, is merely the internal cleansing and detoxification of your body.  We oftentimes have our patients think of it as "spring cleaning" for your insides, but why do we need to undergo a purification program or a detoxification program?  Why even participate in a detoxification diet.  Purification programs or detoxification programs help remove natural toxins from our body and help maintain a healthy weight.

We are exposed to external toxins every day including pollutants, pesticides, and chemicals.  Internally, our bodies produce waste byproducts as a result of normal metabolic function.  Although our body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can become overburdened and overwhelmed by excessive exposure to toxins.

Purification offers your body additional support to expel natural toxins, which is important in maintaining your health and vitality.  We often find many of our patients who are toxic gain a great deal of weight loss is a side benefit to detoxifying.

Toxins can contribute to a wide range of conditions anywhere from stuffy head, fatigue, or difficulty sleeping, indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems, food craving, especially simple carbohydrates and weight gain, reduced mental clarity, brain fog, memory loss, as well as low libido.

How did you determine if you are toxic?  How would you know if you needed to undergo a detoxification program?  If you answer yes to any of the following questions, more likely than not you would benefit from a purification or detox program.

    1.    Do you or have you eaten process foods?
    2.    Do you eat nonorganic fruits and vegetables?
    3.    Do you clean your vegetables?
    4.    Do you eat meat and poultry that are not free range?
    5.    Do you consume genetically altered food?
    6.    Do you or have you ever used artificial sweeteners?
    7.    Do you drink soda pop?
    8.    Do the foods you eat have preservatives, additives, dyes, or sweeteners added?
    9.    Do you eat fast foods or eat out regularly?
    10.    Do you char-broil or grill foods?
    11.    Do you drink coffee regularly?
    12.    Do you drink alcohol?
    13.    Do you consume tap water?

If the majority of the answers to these questions are yes, then it is likely that your diet contributes significantly to your toxic load. Beyond diet, many external toxins, such as perfumes, cleaners, pollution, add to your load. Your health care professional can help you assess your toxic load.

Once you determine you might be toxic or might benefit from a purification program, what are the benefits of purification?  A purification program can have a significant positive effect on the biochemistry of the body while allowing natural toxins and byproducts of daily metabolism to be eliminated.  By participating in a purification program, you may notice the following:  Improved weight management, which means weight loss if weight loss is necessary, increased energy, better digestion, less bloating, less gas, clear skin, shinier hair, disappearance or lessening of symptoms of other health related conditions.

The detoxification programs that we recommend in our clinic are a bit different than other programs.  Our purification program emphasizes supplements and whole foods, particularly fruits and vegetables by limiting high-calorie, refined foods, and saturated fats.  Nourishing yourself with nutrient-rich foods will provide the complex combination of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that are needed to protect your body and promote optimal health.

If you are curious or would like more information concerning purification or detoxification programs or diets, you should contact a qualified health care provider.
